Screening Sleep in Primary Care at Nicklaus Children's Hospital

Why we study sleep in priamry care?

Sleep problems in early adolescence can lead to various mental health risks that affect many different conditions. These risks can result in long-term issues like depression, substance use, and even suicide.

The Pediatric Precision Sleep Network will identify sleep patterns that show a risk for future mental health problems in adolescents. We will create models to help primary care providers to predict and screen for these risks during regular check-ups.

REMEDY aims to learn more about how and why sleep impacts emotional health across late childhood and adolescence. We hope this work will lead to interventions that optimize brain functions during sleep to improve emotional health and development in youth.

The Pediatric Precision Sleep Network (PPSN) is a multi-site study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (U01MH136020). It leverages electronic health data (EHR), the multidimensional sleep health framework, multimodal home sleep monitoring, and advanced computational methods to establish sleep signatures in pediatric primary care patients and use these signatures to predict mental health and develop low-burden and scalable risk stratification algorithms.

The PPSN study will soon be recruiting youth ages 10-13 currently engaged in Primary Care.
